the blue bird

last friday i sipped on my vanilla milkshake and watched the blue bird on youtube. it's a silent film made in 1918 about these two poor children, mytyl and tyltyl, who embark on a journey to find the blue bird of happiness, at the request of fairy berylune. they're assisted by the souls of some things that are in their house who take the form of humans. the film is really cute and magical and the scenery and outfits and messages are all so enchanting. i'd most definitely recommend this film, i loved it so much. the children get to visit mother night and the land of luxury and chief happiness and the happy dead and the unborn children. by the end of the film i'm so jealous that i never experienced such wonder and beauty but i'm also very in love. silent films are really amazing because they can move you without a word being spoken. all that you hear is music.

when i finished the blue bird i felt so cheerful and i just wanted to listen to doris day and dance around the house aw. :-) i had never print screened anything before but i did attempt to when i watched the film so i'm going to share them. it's pretty cool. oh and the above images are from either google or tumblr, i can't remember.

i also watched the 1940 adaptation of the blue bird in which shirley temple stars. i didn't like this one so much but i really did love when mr and mrs luxury said: "they're just too young to appreciate luxury." "or maybe we're too old to escape from it." there's another later version from i think the 70s but i had barely started it before i got bored.

monday moodboard

i watched loads of films last week: thumbelina, coney island, the blue bird (1918 & 1940) then valerie and her week of wonders. czech new wave and silent films are really cool, i plan to watch more some time. on saturday i went to my aunty's place and she had scented candles lit around the house and beautiful african art everywhere. today was really weird. i got a 5 minute detention because i sat on the floor in spanish lol. my art teacher is also very very worried about me and she's going to speak to my year head. i don't even know why. i hope she understands that i don't go out of my way to be so 'unresponsive' or anything. she said it's like i'm not even in the room. i keep wondering why there are no school counselors or anything, someone to just sit in silence with or ramble about everything to and they might not mind so much.

you can't choose what stays and what fades away

beautiful black men

richie havens (above) and malcom x (right)

in assembly today one of the english teachers spoke about the importance of reading, using malcom x as an example. she said that at age 13 he was sentenced to 10 years in prison for a 'petty crime' - breaking and entering i think - where there was an excellent, rare collection of great books. over time malcom x became an intelligent, self-educated man. that's pretty inspiring, considering he was an inarticulate street hustler who had dropped out of school prior to his imprisonment. he changed his own life and turned something negative into something positive, i admire that.
i also learnt today, through this blog post, that a musician called richie havens died today. i had never heard of him before but it sounds like he was an amazing guy. his guitar playing was really cool and he also did poetry. this man opened woodstock festival in 1969 with a 3 hour performance while other musicians arrived and the crowd never got tired. richie havens once said that he only sang songs that moved him. how special and lovely. :-)

monday moodboard

i just finished watching the help. it's a wonderful film oh my god it really made me cry. i didn't go to school today. i told my mum that my head hurts but i just didn't feel up to it at all. she stayed home as well, her back hurts a lot and we haven't done anything. we talked a little bit and decided that in the summer we'll go to this car boot sale near my aunty's house then maybe go strawberry picking afterwards with my brothers and cousins. :-) i'm not looking forward to school this week, i'm really not.

sometimes i get a bit uncomfortable with my existence. it's hard to explain but i feel like i don't necessarily want to be here. it's nothing negative or suicidal, i just want my soul to be floating languidly near the clouds or flying with the wind rather than trapped in my boring body. i'm not even sure if i'm sure about what a soul even is.

cecilia (the virgin suicides)
i just googled it: a soul is the immortal, nonphysical part of a human being or animal. some religions believe that things like mountains and rivers possess souls. that's beautiful and i agree. i can't imagine nature being soulless so i won't. it interests me very much to know that 'heart' and 'ghost' are synonyms of 'soul'. i think of synonyms as sisters. it's kind of funny to think of words as being related to each other.

sleep will not come because sleep does not will it
i want to live in a world where i could go to a park and fall asleep under a tree or next to some flowers and remain undisturbed. i could wake up to a stranger lying near me and we could get talking and i would have made a new friend. how lovely. :-) see i dream when i'm awake and it's nice because these things stay with me for a while. it's after 4.30 now. i'm not sure i'll sleep tonight and that's annoying because i'll probably sleep throughout the day.

frockney rebel

it's felt really weird to not have blogged even once in the last week and a bit omg. staying at my nana's place was kind of boring but at least i wasn't at home and i got to spend time with my little cousins. :-) i went to brick lane last week wednesday with my cousin then we ate nandos and went back to her house then back to my nana's. i kept having really negative thoughts throughout the day and i didn't really enjoy it but it was nice at the same time idk. i didn't buy anything, but this week i went to a cute shop near bethnal green called frockney rebel. i first wanted to go there when i saw the pretty mural thing on the side of the shop on the way to my aunty's house. my mum bought me a cream jumper, a jeans skirt, black shoes and two rings. it came up to £66 which i think is pretty decent. i want to go back there in the summer. :-) yesterday i bought four sets of pretty underwear as well so that's nice.

the frockney rebel changing room (there's only one) really is the loveliest place. there's a full length mirror bordered by colourful fairy lights and a soft carpet under your feet. it's a small cubicle and 2 pictures of elvis presley face each other on the walls. on the back wall pages of a 70s magazine are stuck up and there are 3 in a rack at your feet. they played lots of jazz music while we shopped. next to the till is a tiny red sewing machine. it's not for sale but it's cute. the whole shop is cute. i'm in the mood for cute so here's a song someone i follow on twitter made, it's so beautiful: https://soundcloud.com/heirraid/more-than-the-moon

monday moodboard

thankfully i don't feel very depressed but these pictures are interesting i suppose. i've watched some music documentaries these last few days, a punk one, david bowie, the joy of disco. the 70s interest me, musically and culturally if those are the right words. i'm going to my nana's house this week and i don't know if i'll be able to post anything. probably not. on wednesday my cousin is going to take me to some nice places in london, hopefully we'll go to brick lane. yesterday i read that freddie mercury dressed princess diana up as a man and took her to a gay bar once. :-) i'm listening to rasputin by boney m. it's such a funny song, partly because of some personal jokes i have with a couple of friends from when we learned about rasputin in year 8.
